The third floor of the house is a full, L-shaped walk up attic. The attic was built around 1860, as the Smiths extended the original cabin from one story to three, and added the large vernacular Victorian section that is the front of the house today.

Part of the attic was finished as a fifth bedroom, as shown here:

Other than tearing out the carpet in the attic when we tore out the carpet in the rest of the house, we have done nothing to the attic thus far. We are currently toying with plans for a third-floor master suite.
