the second bedroom
Mercifully, after the psychic scars occasioned by the master bedroom, the second bedroom was nowhere near as bad. The second bedroom is on the southwest corner of the house, over the dining room. Not only is it a fantastic size, it has the beautiful bay window overlooking the pasture:
Of all the rooms in the house, this one was the least aesthetically painful:
It had yellow walls, which the years had admittedly not been kind to (anyone who's ever renovated an old house will tell you that any room that was once painted a bright, sunny yellow will, through the ravages of age, darken to a shade of yellow akin to monkey pi**). But the carpet was relatively clean and in good condition, and the moulding hadn't been torn out and replaced with the skinny, dark, plastic stuff. We thought we'd struck gold, comparatively speaking. But the youngest member of the Brickman House renovation team, who was to reside in the room, took one look at it and decreeed that it would only be fit for habitation if it were pink.
This bedroom also lost its carpet, along with the rest of the house, because let's face it, even if this carpet was in good shape when we moved in, give it a couple of years and it wouldn't be. And besides, those heart pine hardwoods were just begging to be set free. So we set to work on the closest thing to a pure cosmetic remodel we would ever see in this house, and gave this room a fresh coat of paint. Pink for the walls, of course, and bright white for the trim, which lightened the built-in drawers that make up the window seat, and the built-in wall unit you can just about make out on the left side of the middle photo above. The room looks like this now (click either image for a larger view):

The luxury of the cosmetic remodel ended, however, at the closet door. Interestingly, the room has an alcove, ultimately leading to the closet, that houses a sink:
Very convenient! Even more convenient, the back of the closet shares a wall with the hall bath, so during the great bathroom tear out (coming soon to a farmhouse near you in Fall 2003) we plan to turn the sink and closet into a full bath for this bedroom.
Update: Well, it's kind of funny to look at this gallery entry discussing tearing out bathrooms in the Fall of 2003, considering it's now early 2005, and we've just managed to complete one bathroom, and demolish another. Guess we were a bit optomistic in our bathroom plans, huh? For details on the first two bathroom renovations, begin at the January 2005 entry and read from there for a few months.
Much as we'd like to say the bathroom attached to this one's next, we'll probably spend the summer working outside, and only come back around to it this Fall. We'll see how accurate our prediction is this time!
In the meantime, the only change to this room so far was in November 2003, when we swapped out the small bookcase for a larger one to house our daughter's ever-growing collection of books. Roll your mouse over the photo below to see the change:
